An Evolution of Technological
Innovation and Change

Telephone exchanges have been subject to a dramatic technological evolution and expansion. Early equipment terminal blocks consisted of phenolic strips which held stamped metal solder lugs. Outside plant connector blocks were of "open frame" construction with exposed carbon blocks for protection. Density was a mere 32 pairs per vertical foot. Change has been dramatic. Today, Porta's connector and terminal blocks, are modular, utilize plastics, employ wire wrap or quick-clip terminals, and provide density as high as 133 pairs per vertical foot.

Protector technology has also advanced. Porta's carbon protectors utilize proprietary carbon mixtures, shaped electrodes, and have a life as much as 30 times longer than their ancestors.

As the evolution continued, 2 and 3-Element Gas Tube, DELTA Protectors, and ESS 5^™ Protector Modules have become state-of-the-art.

Main frames have also changed to keep pace with advances in connector block and protector technology. The emphasis is on reducing installation cost while providing the density and quality of protection dictated by today's electronic and digital offices.
